Well that was interesting. I've never had much of a desire to visit Wilmington, Ohio....

I've been to Ohio a few times, but never to Wilmington... recently I read on another blog, the news that DHL was laying off 8000+ people at their Wilmington location... Wilmington has a population of 12000.

Started to do some research on Wilmington, wondering what kind of story/narrative could be told by the numbers (median income, demographics, geography etc)...

started to pose the question, what would I do if I was living in Wilmington and I was laid off.

Opened up the Google Earth the video above (it's pretty amazing, the amount of detail and information!) and started to roam around the town.

Started to wonder how many of 12,000 people living in Wilmington worked at DHL, how many people from other counties came into Wilmington to work...

Started to draw a 60 mile radius.

Other interesting things, the town has its stretch of fast food joints, but couldn't find the walmart but I'm sure it's there. It has become what I've been calling lately "Typical Town, USA".

One of the things I noticed during my last road trip driving from north (chicago) to south (atlanta). How each town along the way seems almost identical to the last. McDonalds, Walmart, Shopping mall etc... McDonalds, Walmart, Shopping Mall etc...

Noticed that about 45 miles away is Cincinatti... I'm still early in my research, but if I were laid off there, I'd be heading toward Cincinatti...

That was an amazing experience. Google earth is a powerful tool, if those images really came from there. It means to say that you can pick any area in any part of the world and be aware of what is happening there. Reporters will no longer have to travel and risk their safety to report violent occurrences all over the world.

Thanks for sharing. I wonder if we have one here?

@Bill me too, where are you from?
@9 Yes this is google earth, I recorded it, it's very neat.

@Jena Isle Yes Google earth is pretty amazing. I think people actually contribute those images, so if you see a place that doesnt have one, You can submit. Google earth isnt really in real time, but I'm sure the govt has something that can view satellite pictures in real time :) Where are you from?
